Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) is dark reddish brown with magnificent patterning in the grain  This tree is selectively harvested, primarily in Cameroon, with strict limits to ensure sustainable harvests.

We have worked with the most knowledgeable people in the wood industry to produce a ply that is unique. Okoume, from which our boats are normally produced, is plantation raised, fast growing, pretty, and very light weight. Sapele is a denser, less available hardwood. Plywood of the quality that we demand is only produced from Sapele in small amounts.

Unfortunately for the boat builder, Sapele weighs almost twice as much as the top-quality Okoume that we regularly use. To reduce the weight difference, only the face veneer of these special boats is Sapele. The other two plies are Okoume. For example a Coho built from this special ply weighs about five pounds more than one built from all Okoume. If the boat was cut from wood that was Sapele throughout, this difference would be closer to 15 pounds.
