Osprey Double:
Weighing only 60 pounds, the Osprey Double is a pleasure for two people to paddle, and EASY to load on and off a car. Most plastic and fiberglass tandems weigh about 95 lbs. The Osprey Double scales in 37% lighter! Over the miles and years, a lighter hull really saves wear on your back and tendons. You're able to get places faster, with less stress. Test paddlers comment on how readily the Osprey Double comes up to speed relative to the fiberglass and folding doubles they've paddled.
Rugged
And she's rugged. Eighteen yards of 6 oz. fiberglass cloth encapsulates the hull inside and out. Three layers of cloth provide high tensile strength on the inside center section of the hull, where the paddlers' weight rides. On the outside keel, an extra layer of fiberglass tape, over the cloth, allows you to drag her up beaches--no problem. You get the abrasion protection of glass and the beauty of golden mahogany shining through.
Multi-Chine Hull and Deck
The multi-chine hull consists of 8 panels, similar to our popular Osrpey Std and Coho lines of singles. This makes for a fast double with relatively low wetted surface. John also multi-chined the deck. The camber enables paddlers to use a comfortable, low paddling angle. On a 30" beam boat, this bevel helps out short adults even more. They can paddle with their shoulders more dropped and relaxed than in most other doubles. Plus, the angled deck gives you deluxe foot room and good storage capacity.
Stability
The Osprey Double is stable. A well-balanced adult can stand and dive from the cockpit! Sitting in the kayak, the Osprey Double portrays excellent primary and secondary stability. Even in heavy seas, her 30" beam holds you steady. Want to go swimming in hot weather? Going down the only remaining wild section of the Missouri in Eastern Montana, John Lockwood and daughter Freya experienced 115 (F) degree temperatures, daily. They took turns jumping out of the Double to cool down. Wet reentries were a cinch. Even adults can crawl back in the cockpit from the water without the assistance of a paddle float.
Easy Beauty
The Osprey Double is light, elegantly shaped and eminently seaworthy. Plus, the glass-wood-glass sandwich construction is lighter, stronger, and stiffer than fiberglass or plastic. Build her in 70 to 90 hours. You might also want to consider the option of contructing the versatile Osprey Triple.

*The transverse Metacenter, in inches, is a measure of a kayak's initial stability. A higher number is more stable. All single kayaks computed with same weight person.
**Kayak cruising speed is proportional to the boat's wetted surface, which is the area of frictional drag of the water on the hull, here expressed in sq. ft.
***90% of theoretical hull speed (THS) in mph. A boat's theoretical hull speed is a function of square root of its loaded waterline length (LWL). at approximately 80% to 90% of its hull speed a kayak will start to produce a bow wake longer than its LWL and the effort required to continue acceleration rapidly increases
